Three Cups of Tea Discussion Questions (Ch. 19-22)

Please respond to one of the following discussion questions:

When Greg asked Haji Ali what he should do when he should return to Korphe and find Haji Ali had died (Ch. 19), Haji Ali said, " Listen to the wind." What do you think Haji Ali meant by that statement?

In Ch. 20 Greg says, "The difference between becoming a good local citizen and a terrorist could be an education." Do you agree or disagree? Explain. Do you think this statement applies to citizens in the U.S. as well? Explain.

How is education like water?

In Ch. 21 Greg says that the war on terror "will ultimately be won with books, not bombs." Do you agree or disagree? Explain

How is life like climbing a mountain?

  1. I loved the part in the book where Jahan said "Before I met you, Dr. Greg, I had no idea what education was. But now I think it is like water. It is important for everything in life." I can not thing of a bettter comparison. It made me think of education in the USA and the difference a good education can make on a person's life style. I also started thinking about the different countries around the world and how the type of emphasis that each one made on education was directly related to thier success.

  2. When Haji Ali told Greg to "listen to the wind" I think he was just telling Greg to go with his heart when he is making decisions.

I think what Greg said about fighting the war with books is very important. I think many people just do what they know instead of trying to work it out. If people had more education and knowledge then we could think our way out of problems instead of fighting.

  3. I loved the comparison of education to water also. So many of the people that Greg came into contact throughout the book had such a thirst for knowledge and education. This new-found education and knowledge had a ripple effect. Not only did it affect the lives of the individuals; but it also had a profound effect on the lives of the people within the community. Jahan is a perfect example. Her thirst for an education led the leaders of her community to change their thinking about women going to school. It also provided their community with medical care that had never before been available.
